Pleural Mesothelioma from Asbestos Exposure

Industries such as car mechanics, boiler makers, railroad metal fabrication & electricians which worked in the 70’s to late 90’s possibly have been exposed during their career.  Current exposed industries are construction, renovation tradesmen and mechanics.  Also, family members can be at risk by breathing in asbestos fibres that are brought home on workers’ clothes, shoes, and bodies.

Pleural mesothelioma cases like most asbestos diseases are diagnosed 10 to 30 years after exposure and Australia has the second highest of reported cases in the world due to our lack of awareness.  Different types of asbestos fibres can affect the lungs differently. For example, chrysotile asbestos (a curly fibre) is less likely to cause mesothelioma than amphibole asbestos (a straight fibre).

Pleural mesothelioma symptoms due to pleural effusion range from:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Pain under the rib cage
  • Pain, swelling, or lumps in the abdomen
  • Weight loss for no known reason

Once diagnosed with Pleural Mesothelioma by a confirmed biopsy.  There are different types of treatment for patients with malignant mesothelioma.

Four types of standard treatment are used:

  • Surgery
  • Radiation therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Targeted therapy

New types of treatment are being tested in clinical trials.

  • Biologic therapy
